Car key replacement and lost keys in Sheerness
Lost every key to your car? Don’t worry, we can sort it. This is what we call all keys lost, and it doesn’t mean a tow to a dealer. We come to you, wherever you are on Sheppey, from Sheerness and Queenborough to Minster, Eastchurch and Leysdown. We make a new key from the car’s own locks and program it so the car starts and locks with it just like the original. If it’s a key we can make from stock, it takes about an hour for most cars.
Some makes need a bit more work, because the immobiliser memory has to be programmed directly. That’s EEPROM programming, and we do that at your car too.
Spare keys and transponder programming
If you’ve only got one key, get a spare made. It’s much easier to copy a key that still works, and if you lose that one, snap it or have it stolen, you’ve got a second one to hand instead of a car that won’t start and a much bigger job.
We can supply remote keys, smart keys and manual keys. The chip inside a key is called a transponder, and the car checks it before it will start, so we program it to your car at the car, wherever you are on the island. We keep the most common applications in stock on the van, so for many cars we can make you a spare car key there and then.
Car key repairs in Sheerness
Buttons worn out, case cracked, or the key sticking? If the electronics inside still work, we can often fit a new case and blade, and you keep the key you’re used to. If a key won’t turn, we can repair the ignition or lock set. And if a key has snapped off in the lock or ignition, we can often get the broken piece out first.
Vans, campervans and motorhomes
We make spare and replacement keys for vans, campervans and motorhomes, and we repair their ignitions and lock sets too. If you’ve only got one key, a spare is well worth having: lose it and the van you work from, or the camper you’re about to go away in, isn’t going anywhere. Lots of the holiday and caravan parks around Leysdown and Eastchurch are open from spring to autumn, so if your motorhome only has one key, get a spare cut before you set off.
Jobs we've done on Sheppey
Here are some of the jobs we’ve done around the island.
- Fiat Ducato Kon-Tiki motorhome, Isle of Sheppey. The owner wanted a spare made before going away in their camper, so we cut a manual key to match: a plain blade, no remote buttons.
- 2018 VW Crafter, Isle of Sheppey. We fitted a replacement ignition mechanism. The part was already in stock on the van, so the job didn’t have to wait for one to be ordered in.
- Toyota Prius, Minster. One set of keys had gone missing. The job was a replacement fob, programmed to the car, plus a new emergency key to go with it.
- Citroen ignition barrel, near Eastchurch. The car was parked behind some barns at the end of a long farm track. There’s no postcode out there, so the owner sent directions and we did the ignition barrel work at the car.
- Audi A4, near Leysdown. The keys were locked in the boot, and we got the car open.
- Renault Kangoo van, Isle of Sheppey. The keys had been lost, and the van needed opening and starting again.
Who does the work
Keys and immobilisers are security work. Keycraft Auto Locksmiths is SERMI registered — SERMI is a scheme for security-related vehicle repair. Registration means authorised access to security-relevant vehicle parts and information needed for modern key and immobiliser work, and includes a DBS check. The work is led by Chris, who holds an NVQ Level 3 in vehicle maintenance and repair (IMI) and a Level 3 Diploma in vehicle maintenance and repair (IMI), and spent years as a main dealer mechanic before focusing on auto locksmithing — so programming and diagnostics sit on real workshop experience and IMI Level 3 qualifications, not a short introductory course.
We have access to some dealer diagnostic tools. Lost-key and programming we handle ourselves on site. If a particular car needs kit or access we do not have, we say so up front — better an honest conversation than a wasted visit.

FAQ: Sheerness and Sheppey
Do you come out to Sheerness, Minster, Queenborough and Leysdown?
Yes. We cover the whole island.
I've lost my only car key on Sheppey. Does the car need to go to a dealer?
No. We make a new key from the car’s locks and program it on site. If your car needs kit we don’t have, we’ll tell you when you call.
Can you program a transponder key or a spare remote at my house?
Yes. Programming is done at the vehicle with our own equipment, so your driveway or the roadside outside works fine.
My key is broken or the buttons are worn out. Repair or replace?
If the circuit board still works, we recase it with a new shell and blade, keeping the original electronics. If it has failed, we’ll quote for a new key.
My keys were stolen. Can you stop the old key starting the car?
Yes. When we program the new key, we wipe the missing one from the car’s memory, so it no longer starts the engine.
What are your hours?
We’re out on the road Monday to Friday, 7am to 7pm.
